FSC, rPET & Compostable Labels: A Practical Guide to Sustainable Label Materials
More personal-care and spirits brands now ask for “eco-friendly” labels — but the term covers very different materials. Here is a plain-language breakdown of the three mainstream sustainable label options we run at DJB: FSC-certified paper, recycled rPET film, and compostable bio-based film — and where each one actually makes sense.

FSC-Certified Paper Labels
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper comes from responsibly managed forests and carries a chain-of-custody certificate you can show downstream. It prints beautifully with foil and embossing, and reads as honest and craft-led — a good fit for dry goods, gifts, and premium skincare cartons. The catch: untreated paper absorbs water and oil, so for bottles it needs a lamination pass, which slightly reduces recyclability.
rPET (Recycled PET) Film Labels
rPET film is made from recycled PET bottles. It keeps the clarity and water-resistance of standard PET — ideal for the “no-label look” on shampoo, spirits and cosmetic bottles — while carrying a recycled-content claim (usually certified under GRS). For wet, oily or chilled products it is the most practical sustainable choice we offer.
Compostable / Bio-Based Film (PLA)
Compostable film is plant-derived (commonly PLA or bio-PP). It looks and feels like paper, breaks down under industrial composting, and suits short-life or disposable packaging — think promotional samples, event giveaways, single-use sachets. Note it is moisture-sensitive and needs the right composting facility, so it is not a drop-in for every bottle.
How to Choose: A Quick Checklist
- Dry carton, gift, craft feel? → FSC paper.
- Bottle, jar, wet or oil contact, “no-label” look? → rPET film.
- Short-life disposable pack, strong eco story? → Compostable film.
- Need a certificate for your buyer? → Tell us which scheme (FSC / GRS / EN13432) and we supply the matching material and docs.
