Buyers ask “when can I get them?” before they ask “how much.” The schedule is almost never the printing itself — it is the steps around it. As an independent supplier running both short-run digital and high-volume flexo, we plan every order as a chain from approved artwork to a box at your door, so you can plan production instead of guessing.
The production timeline, stage by stage
A label job is a chain. Each stage starts only when the previous one is signed off, so the total is the sum of the hand-offs, not just press time.
Typical lead time by printing method
The single biggest swing is digital vs flexo. Digital needs no plate, so it is faster on small runs; flexo pays for plate setup up front but is cheaper and steadier on large runs.
| Method | Setup | Production | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital | None (no plate) | 3–5 working days | 300–5,000 pcs, fast turn, many SKUs |
| Flexographic | 1–3 days (plate/cylinder) | 7–12 working days | 10k+ pcs, foil/emboss, steady repeat |
| Reorder (either) | Plate on file | 30–50% faster | Same artwork, same material |
What adds days — and what doesn’t
Most “why is it late” cases come from the same few causes. None of them are the press; all of them are decisions made before or after it.
| Adds time | Typical extra | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Each proof round | ~2 days / round | File goes back, gets corrected, re-checked |
| Custom / specialty material | 5–10 days | Not in stock; mill or converter must slit or make it |
| Material made to order by supplier | +7–10 days | Label factory waits on its own supplier first |
| Complex finish (foil + emboss + dome) | 1–3 days | Multiple passes, each needs curing/registration |
| Sea freight instead of air | +20–35 days | Port, customs, last-mile |
What doesn’t usually add time: a color change within the same artwork, a small text edit before plates are cut, or combining several SKUs into one shipment. Tell us the full list up front and we batch them.
How to shorten the timeline
- Approve the proof fast. A 2-day proof round becomes a week the moment it sits in an inbox over a weekend.
- Order from stock materials. BOPP, PET, and standard papers are on the shelf; specialty films and textured papers are not.
- Lock the artwork before we cut plates. Changes after setup mean a new plate, not a tweak.
- Plan sea freight early. If 25–40 days by sea fits your launch, the unit cost drops a lot versus air.
- Reorder on file. Keep the same artwork and material and the job skips setup entirely.
First order vs reorder
A first order carries the one-time setup (plate/cylinder, color match, material qualification). A reorder reuses all of that, so it is typically 30–50% faster and cheaper. If you expect repeats, we keep your plates and material spec on file so the second run is a phone call, not a project.
Frequently asked questions
Does the lead time include shipping?
No. Production time and shipping time are separate clocks. A 5-day digital job still needs 5–7 days by air (or 25–40 by sea) on top. Always check which number a quote is giving you.
Can you rush an order?
Often, yes — if the material is in stock and the finish is single-pass. Rush usually means dropping proof rounds to one and prioritizing the press queue. It is not free of risk on color-critical jobs, so we flag it before committing.
Why is my reorder faster than my first order?
The plate, color match, and material spec are already qualified and on file. We skip setup and go straight to print, which is where the 30–50% saving comes from.
What is the longest lead-time risk?
A custom material the mill has to produce, or a finish that needs several registration passes. Both are predictable if we know about them at quoting time — the surprise is what costs the days.

DJB Print is an independent, manufacturing-trading integrated supplier of labels and custom packaging. Beyond labels, we source and coordinate cartons, bottles and pouches, and take responsibility for the quality, colour, finish and VI consistency of the whole pack. The timelines above are everyday benchmarks, not a delivery promise; your confirmed schedule comes after we see your file and quantity.
